Hello Third Grade Families!  The weather was beautiful for Mother’s Day!  I hope the day was delightful for everyone!! Last Friday was such an exciting day at SJF!  The final round for mathletics competition was held in the morning.  The three students competing in the final round did a marvelous job!  I am so proud of them! We ended this fun-filled day with some dancing in the parking lot!  This week is a short week for the students.  The staff has a meeting on Friday. 

Here is our week at a glance…

Monday – Our reading story is called Floating Home.  We are doing a review unit in spelling.  I have given the students 20 words wheich they will be tested on this Thursday. Review chater 7 in math! 

Tuesday – Chapter 7 math test. We are continuing our work with adverbs in English.

Wednesday – We are skipping ahead to section c, chapter 9 in math.  This is a start to dividing with remainders.

Thursday – All the book orders are due today.  This is a great, inexpensive way to get some summer reading books for your child.  The spelling and reading test will be given today. 

*The Chicago project is due on Monday, May 21st!

*No school Friday, May 18th.

Hello!  It is Spirit Week at SJF, and we are busy, having sum fun!  Here is a look at what we will be doing this week…

Monday – Roll out of bed and come to school!  Our spelling unit will be unit 35 – compound words. Our reading story is The Extra-Good Sunday. The Chicago Project will be handed out and discussed.  Feel free to contact me if you have any questions about this project. The due date is May 21st.

Tuesday – Jersey day!  Wear your favorite jersey with your uniform. We are going to listen to our reading story and and discuss why visualizing is so important when reading a book or story.

Wednesday – Charity Day – For $1.00, you may support the following charity of your choice and be out of uniform.  Wear the “color” to show your support of that charity!

*pink – breast cancer                *blue/white -  U.S. Veterans  

*yellow – childhood cancer     *orange – childhood hunger

*red – heart disease                  *any color –  Misericordia        

*Teacher Appreciation Day – Teachers in Tiaras!  Student Council will be coming around to take a picture of your teacher in the tiara your class has designed!

Thursday – Student Appreciation Day – All School Bingo (1:45) – Wear your favorite SJF shirt or royal blue – over uniform, not out of uniform!

Friday– Live Mathletics! Thirdand Fourth Grade will go to the gym at 8:15. Good luck to the winner in our room!!!!

  “Sum” Fun in the parking lot – Out of uniform in our new t-shirts! – Spirit Banner winners will be chosen.

The Week at a Glance for April 30 – May 4

Hello!  I can’t believe it is the last day of April!  The weather is supposed to warm up, and I know many students are thinking about their upcoming baseball or softball game.  I have talked to the students about remembering what is important right now.  Everyone still needs to stay focused in school! I am so proud of my class in the mathletics competition.  We still need to work very hard as a class!

Here is our Week at a Glance…

Monday – We will begin unit 34 in spelling.  This unit has words with the suffix -ly.  Our reading story is called Mailing May. We are staring our unit on Chicago today.  The students are so excited!

Tuesday – We will review pronouns and homophones in English.  (words that sound the same but are spelled differently) knows-nose

Wednesday – The take- home English test will be given today.  This is a great way for the students to use their books and review for the in- class test for unit 11. We are working with division in math.  Please practice those facts!

Thursday – The in-class unit 11 English test will be given today. The students will also have a math quiz on section A & B in chapter 7. The photo of you with your child is due today.  Thanks for your help!

Friday – The reading and spelling test will be given.  The Chicago field trip forms and white t-shirt are due today!  Don’t forget to pay for yourself if you are able to come on this wonderful trip!  The May Crowning mass is at 11:00.  The students will be dismissed at11:45.

The Week at a Glance for April 23-27

Hello!  I am so sorry that this is getting to you late. I am so proud of my mathmeticians!  They are doing great!  Keep up the super work!  Parents, if you have not had the chance to look at the auction items…please do!  They are amazing!  I love the 3rd grade picture! 

Here is our week at a glance…

Reading – Our reading story is The Pinata Make.  The skills lesson is step in a process. The open book test will be given on Friday. 

Spelling – Unit 33 this week.

Science – The study guide was handed out.  The test will be on Friday.

Math – We are continuing our work with division.

English – We are working on unit 11 which is dealing with pronouns.

**Your child will be bringing home their progress report on Wednesday.  Please sign the small sheet on the front to indicate that you have looked over this packet.  The last sheet is a very important form about the field trip for 3rd grade.  The trip will take place on Wednesday, May 30th. We need to give the boat company an accurate head count, please return the field trip form as soon as possible!

**Don’t forget to turn in the t-shirt form and the money for Fisher’s Fundraiser!

The Week at a Glance for April 16-20

Hello and welcome back to school!  I hope you had a wonderful Easter break!  This is what to expect this week…

Reading – We had started the story Leah’s Pony before Easter break.  We will review and take the open book test on Wednesday. Our Unit 5 test will be given on Friday.  We will work on the sloppy copy of the writing portion of the unit test.

Spelling – Unit 32 is all about irregular plural words.

English – We are going to work on writing projects this week.  We will be going back to the book next week.

Math – Tuesday will be the 0-12 timed test.  The test for chapter 9 will be given on Wednesday.  We are going to start division on Thursday.

Science – We are starting Chapter 11 in Science.  This is all about Forces and Motion.  What makes something move?

The Week at a Glance for April 2-4

Hello!  We have 3 full days of school the week of April 2nd. 

 Here is our week at a glance…

Reading – We are going to start the next story called Leah’s Pony.  We will review and take the test the week after spring break.

Spelling – We will focus on Easter words this week.

English – We are going to complete a fun writing project in class.

Math – Continue to practice math facts!  We will have a chapter 9 quiz on Tuesday.

Social Studies – A study guide was handed out on Friday.  We will take the Chapter 8 & 9 test on Wednesday.  The monument project is due on Tuesday.

Thank you so much for the book gifts from the Book Fair!  You are so sweet and generous!  I added 8 new books to our class library!  Thank you so much!!!

The students will not have to do an accelerated test during these 3 days.  If they have read a book, it would be wise to take a test to get ahead.  Some students have been waiting until the last morning to take a test, and they have had computer problems or over-crowded library.

I hope you have a wonderful and refreshing spring break. (I know I am happy to take a break from making those lunches!) If you are traveling, please be safe.  Enjoy this time with your family!

The Week at a Glance for March 26-30

Hello!  I hope everyone has enjoyed the wonderful books at the Book Fair! We are goin to have “Change Wars” to earn books for charities and to help our school library.  Watch for the note coming home today!

Our Week at a Glance…

Reading – We are going to focus on the author’s purpose this week.  Our story is called More Than Anything Else.

Spelling – Unit 31.  These words have -s or -es ending.

English – We have completed unit 9.  We are going to write a 5 paragraph paper about Friends.  This paper will be done in school.

Math – We are multiplying on digit by 2 digits!  PLEASE continue to practice multiplication facts! 

Social Studies – We are finding out about our local and state government.  We will also learn about our countries government. The children will be doing a monument project later this week.

The collection boxes may be sent in this week or next.  Have a wonderful week!

Hello and happy Spring this week…even though it has been feeling like summer!   I hope you have been enjoying this amazing weather!  Thank you so much for making my Friday birthday so special.  The students were so sweet!

This is our week at a glance…

Reading – Our story is called Brave Irene.  We will be making predictions about this story and others.  Open book test on Friday.

Spelling – Unit 29 is contractions.  The students will understand the two words that make up these contractions and use them appropriately.

English – We will finish unit 9 this week.  A take home test will be sent home and an in-class test will be given at the end of the week.

Math – We are going to start chapter 9.  We will work with patterns in multiplying.  A timed 6′s test will be given on Tuesday.  It is so important to continue to practice multiplication facts! 

Social Studies – We will stop science and begin social studies now. We will start unit 4.  This unit is about Governments in communities.

Special notes

The students may be out of uniform for $1 on Friday.  The Book Fair is next week.  Our class will visit the book Fair on Monday, March 26th. Have a wonderful week!

The Week at a Glance for March 12-16

Good morning!  I hope everyone was out enjoying the beautiful weather we had on Sunday.  Spring is almost here!  Last week was testing for Terra Nova.  The students were great and they seemed calm. Friday was a very emotional day.  We honored our SJF Hero, Conner Lowry. I was so proud of my students!  Even though they did not know Conner, most of them knew someone that had served for our country.  The tribute for Conner was very touching!

A Week at a Glance…

Reading – We will be reading a nonfiction story called Chibi.  The ope book test will be on Friday.

Spelling – This week we are working with unit 28.  This unit will cover words that end in ed or ing.

English – Unit 9 adjectives.  We will also learn about adjectives that compare, using commas in a series, and using the words a, an & the.

Math – We will continue with the timed tests.  We still have 7 & 8 left.  The chapter 6 test will be on Thursday.

Science – the chapter 10 astudy guide will be handed out and we will go over it.  The test should be Friday.  

*Speicial Notes*

* One Accelerated Reading test should be done by Friday.

*Those attending the St. Patrick’s Day mass on Tuesday should arrive at 7:15.

*Weare a touch of green on Friday.

The Week at a Glance for March 5-9

Hello!  Our first day of Terra Nova Testing will start today.  Getting plenty of rest and eating a good breakfast are the most important ways to prepare for this test.  I am so happy pencils and erasers were all here! The terra nova test will be given in the morning.  The students will still go to their specials in the afternoon. I have also told the children they may bring in hard candy for the test.  We will continue with a writing project, spelling, math and science in the afternoon. I do not expect the students to do an Accelerated Reading Test this week, but if they get one done they will be ahead! I will be giving a timed quiz on 3′s and 4′s this week.  Have a great week and feel free to contact me if you have any questions!
